Welcome to our new weekly feature Required Reading. If you are going to call yourself a comedy nerd these are the sketches, routines, comedians and shows that you need to know. Each week we’ll post a item that is a must know for comedy nerds. Of course this is somewhat subjective so please feel free to comment and post links to your personal Required Reading or please email us to suggest what you think should make the list. You can reach us at Info(at)thecomedynerds(dot)com.
We kick it all off with The State. It’s not thought provoking. There’s no social commentary. But if you are a comedy nerd and somebody asks you how to make pudding, you better say, “I cook and then I chill. Awww yeah.”
THE STATE – 240 DOLLARS WORTH OF PUDDING

I don’t know, man…
I barely had an inner chuckle on this one. Required reading?
Hmmm…
Oh, how to explain the appeal of The State to the uninitiated? It’s like try to tell a stranger ’bout Rock and Roll…
I have watched “Porcupine Racetrack” with enough stone-faced people that I’ve given up trying. All I can say is I was in high school when The State hit the airwaves and for my friends and I, the world was our oyster and we had a lot of free time we could fill by repeating things to each other like “You’re pissing the customer off!” or “He’s like a homosexual Fonzie.” or “You ruined my melon”.
Also, why would anyone have that much pudding? That’s crazy!
When Michael Ian Black says “It ain’t none of your concern” that still cracks me up.
Alright, I’ll give it one star for bizarre, and one star for not relying on that alone and actually having some amusing dialogue.
Just remember that my scale goes to 58.
I WANNA DIP MY BALLS IN IT!!!
This show ruled my youth. Started watching it again since the DVD’s came out a while ago and it still holds up (IMHO).
