Does Comedy Influence Politics?

by The Comedy Nerds on September 15, 2008

flagLately, it seems like you can’t find comedy in this country without a mention of politics. It’s on everyone’s mind and in every late night monolgue.

So with politics playing such a big part of shows like The Tonight Show, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and Saturday Night Live is all this discussion having an effect on what is going on in the world?  Does a solid Weekend Update joke change anyone’s vote in November?  Can we laugh our way into a better country?  Man, we really hope so.  (that’s the biblical man, meaning mankind and not man meaning a dude.)

I realized today there was a joke that actually changed my opinion on something.

It was an old George Carlin bit on prostitution where he said “How can it be illegal to sell something that is fine to give away for free?”

And I had to admit, I couldn’t argue when he put it that way. So I went from someone who didn’t think prostitution should be legal without feeling too strongly about it, to someone who thinks it should be legal, but won’t ever actually do anything about it.

Progress!
